Scripted Drills
Focused single-rule exercises. Each drill isolates one COLREGS encounter geometry so you can practice the specific rule without the noise of a full open-ended passage. The engine assesses identically — rules are enforced, errors are flagged.
Rule 14 — Head-On
A vessel is meeting you head-on. Both vessels must alter to starboard. Make a bold, early alteration — do not hesitate or turn to port.
Rule 14 — Head-On (Non-Compliant Contact)
Head-on, but the other vessel is NOT altering as required. You must still alter to starboard — do not wait for her to act.
Rule 15 — Crossing (Give-Way)
A vessel is crossing on your starboard bow — you are the give-way vessel. Keep clear: alter to starboard and pass astern of her.
Rule 17 — Stand-On (Late Give-Way)
You are the stand-on vessel in a crossing situation. The give-way ship is NOT altering. Hold course and speed first — but be ready to act boldly if she fails completely.
Rule 13 — Overtaking
You are overtaking a slower vessel coming up from astern. You must keep clear until finally past and well clear. Do not close the CPA.
Rule 16 — Give-Way Inaction (Multi-Contact)
You are give-way in a multi-contact crossing situation. Rule 16 demands early, substantial action. Small or late alterations are not enough — make a bold move now.
Rule 19 — Restricted Visibility
You are in dense fog. A radar contact is forward of your beam. Rule 19(d) applies: do NOT alter to port for a contact forward of the beam. Reduce speed and alter to starboard if action is needed.
Advanced — Mixed Encounters
A complex scenario with simultaneous overtaking, crossing, and stand-on encounters. Resolve each in priority order — safety first, navigation second.
Switch to the open-ended passage — emergent traffic, dynamic weather, and a full Southampton → Calais transit where anything can happen.
